New Scam… Smishing (scam by text message).

We have had a report that a student at another University has received a SMS Phishing message (text message) purporting to be from the University.

The message states that the student’s attendance is below 60% and as such is in breach of their student loan terms. It then goes on to state that they need to reply if they believe this to be untrue and to send student ID number and other personal details.

The message was then followed up the next day urging the student to respond to “avoid further action being taken”.

The student in question did not respond to the messages and reported them to their University. (Go #Cybersecure student 🙂 ).

What should I do if I get one of these?

  • Don’t reply to the message.
  • Delete the text.
  • Block the number.
