Altmetric Update: new highlights tab and streamlined interface

Altmetric is a tool that tracks online attention surrounding research papers. Their recent update makes it easier to see top influencers, international reach and most-mentioned journals.

New Highlights Tab

When you first login to Altmetric you will now immediately see a new Highlights tab. The tab contains various “data blocks”; each provides a different insight into the attention data, such as a list of the top 3 mention authors, top journals, latest news highlights, a map of global attention, a chart of the distribution of Altmetric Attention Scores, etc.

Setting the default to your research publications

By default the Highlights tab displays details about all of Stirling’s research publications.  So the first thing you will want to do is see your own publications:

  • In the Quick Search box in the top right hand corner, type your last name
  • Choose your name from the Verified Authors that appear
  • This runs the search, then the Highlights tab displays your publications’ details

Next set your publications’ view as the default:

  • Click on the blue Save Search button (right hand side)

  • Click on the Saved Searches icon (left hand side)
  • Click in the Set Default column next to the saved search

  • Click on the Altmetric database icon to return to the home page

From now on your publications’ details will display automatically whenever you login to Altmetric.

Research Outputs Details

If you are used to the previous Altmetric interface – all that information and data is still there. Click on the Research Outputs tab to see the listing of research papers and their scores.

As before click on a coloured donut to see the details of the various mentions the paper has garnered.

Email Alerts When Your Papers Are Mentioned

It’s now even easier to setup email alerts to be notified whenever your research papers are mentioned:

  • As described above, set the view to your own publications, then click on the Mentions tab
  • Click on the blue Save Search button (right hand side)
  • Click on the Saved Searches icon (left hand side)
  • Click in the Reporting, Email column next to the saved search – you can choose from Daily, Weekly or Monthly email alerts

  • Click on the Altmetric database icon to return to the home page
  • You will be sent regular email notifications with details of any recent mentions of your research papers

Exporting Data

  • From any search results screen select the Export this Tab and you can download results as a CSV file to import into Excel
