Altmetric have compiled a list of the top 100 academic research articles that caught the public imagination in 2014.
The list is based on mentions from a variety of sources, including: mainstream news, blogs, social media, post-publication peer-review forums and platforms such as Reddit and YouTube.
To view the list visit: http://www.altmetric.com/top100.
You can filter the list in various ways, for example, by subject Category or Country.
The list makes delightful reading: from the serious “Emergence of Zaire Ebola Virus Disease in Guinea – Preliminary Report” (number 33) to the light hearted “The survival time of chocolates on hospital wards: covert observational study” (number 6) and perhaps the ridiculous? “Searching the Internet for evidence of time travelers” (number 8).
Further detail on the methodology used and a summary of key points is at: http://www.altmetric.com/blog/altmetric-top-100-2014/.
