We are happy to report that EThOS, the British Library’s E-Theses Online Service, has been restored. The platform had been unavailable since a cyber attack on the British Library in 2023.
EThOS contains metadata for theses held in UK university repositories. It includes descriptions of over 650,000 theses from UK universities from the 1700s onwards.
In many records you will see an ‘Access thesis from university’ button: this links out to university repositories, where it may be possible to download the full-text of the thesis. Note that the platform continues to be updated with a backlog of missing content.
You may remember that it used to be possible to request digitisation of print only theses. EThOS no longer provides this service, but researchers can request digitisation by emailing the relevant university library. At this stage, universities can still request digitisation of theses and the files will be returned to the university for upload to their own repository.
