Have you ever opened a book and discovered something unexpected tucked between its pages?
A handwritten note.
A faded photograph.
An old receipt, postcard or pressed flower.
These small, forgotten objects carry stories – glimpses of lives once lived, moments paused in time. On Friday 29 May, we’re inviting you to celebrate those stories with a very special free concert in the Library, featuring Scottish singer‑songwriters Yvonne Lyon and Boo Hewerdine.
Music inspired by forgotten treasures
Yvonne and Boo’s new collaboration, Things Found In Books, is an album born from chance discovery.
While visiting the second‑hand bookshop at Culzean Castle, they came across a noticeboard covered in items left behind in donated books: notes, photographs, letters, postcards, old receipts and fragments of people’s lives. The board became a quiet archive of memory and mystery, surrounded by shelves of well‑loved books.
Inspired by these finds, Yvonne and Boo began writing songs in response to them – weaving these ephemeral stories together with their own experiences. The result is an album filled with nostalgia and beauty, hope and longing, and a deep sense of connection across time.
A concert made for the Library
There’s something especially fitting about hearing these songs performed live in a library space – a place where stories are discovered, shared and remembered every day.
This intimate performance will bring music and storytelling together, turning found objects into songs and inviting us to reflect on the traces we leave behind in the pages we love.
Bring something you’ve found in a book
To make the evening even more special, we’re inviting audience members to bring along something they’ve found in a book – whether it’s a bookmark, note, photograph, ticket stub or mystery scrap. You don’t need to pin it on our board (unless you want to); simply bringing it adds to the shared spirit of the event and the quiet magic of found stories.
