Information Security Alert: new phishing threat detected

This morning we have received several reports of a phishing email purporting to be from our Chancellor Jack McConnell. Thanks to those who reported the issue, we were able to act quickly and block the offending email, removing it from a further 413 mailboxes.

See below how this was identified as a phishing email.

Beware of attachments

The threat in this particular email lay in the attachment – when the pdf file was opened, users were presented with a fake ‘secure online document’ link (see image below). When clicked, the user was directed to a malicious website which was designed to steal your credentials (username and password).

Not sure whether an email is genuine or not?

If you are ever in doubt about the authenticity of an email, please don’t hesitate to forward it to the Information Centre and we can advise you.
