New Social Study Zone now open

The area in between the new Library entrance and the Atrium fast food bar (formerly used as the Interim library) has now been reopened to students as the Social Study Zone. This is an extension to the existing study space available in the Library and the Atrium areas. The concept of “social learning space” is central to the planned re-modelling of the whole Atrium area, so although this is a temporary arrangement there will be further development and improvement over time.

The Social Study Zone will be open 24/7 and provides a variety of study desks – some formal and some informal.

Given the enormous popularity of the refurbished Library, we hope that this area will complement the zoned approach taken in the Library and provide some ‘social’ study spaces for students particularly useful for group work. We have extended the general rules relating to level 2 of the Library into this area as follows:

• phones switched to silent (use Atrium for calls)
• cold food only (no smelly or noisy food)
• covered drinks only
• please clear rubbish to bins

This area is also open beyond current Library opening times (midnight) so those wishing to pull an all nighter now have somewhere to study.

The zoning in the Library is going very well, with students largely respecting the Silent zone on Level 4 and the Quiet zoning of Level 3. If you are studying in either of these areas and wish to report anybody not observing the rules, please email the Information Centre and we will do our best to get upstairs to assist. Email both library@stir.ac.uk and infocentre@stir.ac.uk if possible, remembering to tell us where you are!

The group study rooms in the Library are proving immensely popular so it is wise to book upfront. You can book at the panel outside each group study room or see our Group Study Room web page for more information about the location, facilities and a link to the online booking system. http://www.is.stir.ac.uk/libraries/GroupStudyRooms.php
