End of the road for Windows 10

We are approaching the final stage of our campus-wide upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This upgrade programme began last summer with the successful migration of all student lab and LapSafe devices (1127 in total). In August 2025, we launched the staff device upgrade programme and have since upgraded 1567 staff devices to Windows 11.

We are now looking to identify and either upgrade or replace the remaining c200 devices that we can see on our monitoring software. These devices will be blocked from the network on FRIDAY 13TH FEBRUARY.

What will happen next?

In early February, any remaining Windows 10 devices will be marked as non-compliant in our device management software. This will trigger a series of automated warning notifications to the primary user of the device.

In addition, the Information Centre will directly contact the individual we believe to be the primary user to ensure they are aware that their device will lose network access from Friday 13 February.

How do I know if I have a device on Windows 10?

To check your device’s operating system:
Settings > System > About
Your version of Windows will be displayed under Windows specifications.

What to do if you have a device on Windows 10

If you discover that you are using a Windows 10 device, please contact the Information Centre as soon as possible for advice.

  • If this is your primary work device, we will arrange a replacement.
  • If this is not your primary device, it will be collected and returned to the device pool (provided it meets age and condition requirements).

Please note that it is now university policy for staff to have one laptop for work, suitable for use wherever you are working. Additional or secondary laptops will not be replaced.

I have some laptops stored for new staff – will they be on Windows 11?

Any laptop that has not connected to the university network for a significant period will face issues when it is plugged in – as security updates have not been installed, including the upgrade to Windows 11. For this reason, departments should not keep laptops in storage for future use.

All university-purchased laptops are now part of the Centralised Purchasing scheme and must be managed by the Information Centre. If your department has any spare laptops, please return them to the Information Centre so they can be assessed and added to the central pool.

When new staff join, or if an individual requires an upgrade or has a faulty device, please contact the Information Centre for support.
