Open Access Button Retiring: What You Need to Know

This November, the Open Access Button – a tool long used to find free, legal research articles – will officially be sunset. Since its launch, the Open Access Button has played an important role in making scholarly literature more accessible to the public. Their developers recommend users transition to Unpaywall, a similarly mission-driven service that provides free access to millions of open access articles.

At Stirling our existing LibKey tools already integrate Unpaywall’s data, ensuring that you will continue to have seamless access to open content when searching for journal articles – no extra steps needed.

Removing the Open Access Button Plugin

If you have the Open Access Button browser extension installed, you can remove it in just a few clicks:

  • Chrome: Right-click the Open Access Button icon in your browser toolbar and select “Remove from Chrome…”
  • Edge: Right-click the extension icon and select “Remove from Microsoft Edge”
  • Firefox: Click the menu (☰) > Add-ons and themes > Extensions, then click the three dots next to the Open Access Button and choose “Remove”
