Temporary Issue Creating Reading Lists via Canvas

A number of staff trying to create their 2025/6 reading list have reported that the options to ‘Create new list’ or ‘Rollover and update an existing list’ are not showing when they click ‘Reading List’ in the Canvas module. Instead, they receive a request to “Please contact the library to set up this tool in your course“.

This is Issue is affecting most universities and is being investigated urgently by Ex Libris (the company that provides the reading list system).

If you receive the error message when trying to create your list via Canvas, you may use the following alternative method to rollover a list from a previous year. Alternatively, contact the Library for assistance.

  • Go to the list created in 2024/25 (or or whichever year you want to rollover).
  • Click the 3 dots at top of list and select Rollover/Duplicate List.
  • Update the title of the list (e.g. remove the word ‘rollover’ and add the academic year (2025/6).
  • In the ‘Link to Course’ box click the X to delete the old code and then enter the module code again and select the 2025/6 list.
  • Click ‘Create list’.

The list should now appear when you click ‘Reading List’ in Canvas and you can update it as usual. Don’t forget to Publish the list when you have finished your updates.
