Before you write your letter to Santa you may want to read this post to find out if your wish list item are likely to connect to Wi-Fi on Campus.
Several popular multimedia devices cannot work on an enterprise Wi-Fi networks such as our UoS Multimedia. These include (but are not restricted to) the following:
Google Home
Google Home Mini
Google Nest Devices
Google Chromecast
Sonos Wi-Fi Speakers
Wi-Fi Smartplugs
Wi-Fi Lighting systems
These devices are designed for the domestic market. They expect be run on home networks where the user has a simple password or key to connect the device to the network and where the device is then able to communicate with other devices on the same closed and exclusive network.
To operate devices of this type often requires a controller app running on a device such as smartphone or tablet which is also connected to the same network.
On our enterprise UoS Multimedia Wi-Fi this is not possible for two reasons:
1) Multimedia devices can only connect to the UoS Multimedia Wi-Fi network whilst smartphones and tablets can only connect to the Eduroam Wi-Fi
2) Peer-to-peer communication over Wi-Fi from device-to-device is blocked on all our Wi-Fi for security reasons.
If you are in doubt as to whether your device can be connected to our Wi-Fi, please contact the Information Center providing the make and model of the device.
