Book Week Scotland 2019

Scotland’s annual celebration of everything book, writing and reading-related is back, from 18-24 November. The theme this year is conversation. That’s right, we’re having a good old blether at Book Week Scotland.

Blether is a collection of stories and poems written by the public and some of Scotland’s most talented authors. It is the culmination of a 3-month long writing project run by the Scottish Book Trust in 2018.

The book has been created as a gift for Scotland for Book Week Scotland and will be distributed across the country during Book Week Scotland.

Big Book Swap

During Book Week Scotland we will be launching our very own book swap shelf (bookcase) in the Library Wellbeing Space.

A book swap is a great way for you to save money, recycle old books and read new ones. Bring your book, place it on the shelf and take a book in return. Use the hashtag #BigBookSwap to share your bookish swaps.

Book swap books are not part of the library collection and do not have to be checked out of the library.

Book Week Digital Festival

Returning for its third year is Book Week Scotland’s Digital Festival. Take park in #BookWeekScotland, wherever you are in the world, with a series of live-streamed events, interactive social media, and more.

Vote for your favourite Scots word

To celebrate A Year of Conversation and the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Scottish Book Trust has invited the public to submit iconic Scots words through Scottish Book Trust’s social media channels and website.

Over 200 words were nominated, from various dialects such as Doric, Shetlandic, Dundonian and Glaswegian.

The panel whittled down the submissions to a shortlist of 30 Scots words that have stood the test of time, and are well-loved and well-used by the nation.

Find out more about the words and vote for your favourite below before Friday 15 November. The most popular Scots word will be revealed during Book Week Scotland!

More information about the shortlisted Scots words, including further definitions, can be found at Dictionary of the Scots Language.
