Intro to Cyber Security Month October 2025

October is Cyber Security Month – a Europe-wide initiative led by ENISA and the European Commission to remind us all how important it is to stay safe online.

Cyber attacks are getting smarter, faster, and powered by new tech like AI. That’s right, the same tools that can help us work are also being used by criminals to create more convincing scams, deepfakes, and phishing emails. Protecting our digital lives has never been more important.

Throughout October, our Cyber Security team will be sharing quick tips, resources, and events to help you boost your cyber know-how. Whether you’re a total beginner or you already live and breathe this stuff, there’s something here for you.

We are not focusing on a particular theme this year, however, AI does make an appearance a few times. Friend or foe? There are many different perspectives.

What’s on:

Week 1: Events: A day in the life of an Ethical Hacker

On Thursday, 9th October at 12.30 there will be a face-to-face session with an Ethical Hacker. Have you ever wondered how a hacker can be “ethical”? This is your chance to find out. They use the same tricks as cyber criminals but with permission to test our defences before the bad guys do. Book here

Other activities:

  • Graffiti Wall within the library with a cyber related poll where library users can vote and participate in sharing experiences.
  • Additional free training cybersecurity certification offered for a limited period of time. Access here.
  • An additional blog around Cyber Security Podcasts.

Week 2: AI – Friend or Foe?

It wouldn’t be a cyber security event without AI being mentioned in some way. Week 2 will include a blog on AI, its practical uses, it uses in scams and how to use it responsibly.

We will also be sharing guidance and info from GEANT on being able to recognise AI scams and a first aid kit for cyber incidents.

We will also have a face-to-face event for students, whereby Mr Michael Kleinman – CyberScotland Partnership Engagement Officer who developed the Cyber Scotland training for the students, will be on site on Wednesday, 15th October with a stall in Campus Central.

Week 3: New Cyber Security Training (Staff and Students)

We are launching new and improved training for both staff and students so keep an eye out for this.

Week 4: Cyber Police

Closing out Cyber Month, is the Cyber Police Series: Think Netflix, but cyber. Follow Detective Luis Moreno as he tackles real-world cybercrime cases in London, uncovering how criminals operate and how they’re caught.

Season 1: MetaCompliance – MyCompliance Cloud
