Information Services has successfully upgraded over 2,500 staff and student devices to Windows 11 over the summer. On the student side this includes 430 All-In-One devices in the central computing labs, 77 core teaching room presentation machines and 150 student loan laptops.
You will find the Windows 11 student setup familiar, with the core Microsoft 365 apps available on the device and most other software available from Apps Anywhere.
Things to be aware of
Change to login process – long username required
Students use format: username@students.stir.ac.uk (your email address)
Staff use format: username@stir.ac.uk
Using the old Windows 10 method (\\stirlan\username) will not work for staff and just entering the username will not work for students.
Logging off
Please use the desktop shortcut to ‘Sign Out’ when you finish with the device. It is not possible to access the power functions on the device as this is managed remotely.
Software and authentication
Apart from the core Microsoft 365 suite, all student software is accessed through Apps Anywhere. We have worked closely with Faculties over the summer to ensure that the required software is available. Staff can request licensed software that is needed for teaching but not available in Apps Anywhere via our UniDesk web form.
Multi-Factor Authentication
To access all services and apps on the device, it is necessary to go through Multi-Factor Authentication when logging in. The Company portal (equivalent to Software Centre on Windows 10) will open when you login to the PC. Please login when prompted and answer the MFA challenge to ensure you have access to all services. If you dismiss the Company Portal login, you will risk not having access to key services like printers. You can search for and login to Company Portal at any time if you find you have no printer access.
If you have any questions about the student PC setup, please contact the Information Centre.
