12 Days of Library and IT

Unwrap the improvements we’ve made to library and IT at Stirling in 2024.

During the first 12 days of December we will be sharing some of the things that we have done to make your time studying in the library better.

Our commitment to maintaining the library as a space where your student experience is at the heart of everything we do. We engage with students through various channels, including social media, email, chat, and in-person interactions, our library suggestion scheme, we also run various user experience events throughout the year.

On the first day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a way to get round campus easily.

This year we introduced the Wayfinder tool which you can download to your phone or you can use on of the conveniently placed terminals around campus. Wayfinder has an interactive map that can take straight to the location on Campus you are looking for. See the Wayfinder section in UniDesk self-service for more information.

On the second day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a motivational screen that I can see.

Following a student’s suggestion, we displayed motivational images on the library’s digital screens to inspire our 4th-year students as they worked on their dissertations.

On the third day of Christmas Information Services gave to me Lego to unwind creatively.

We received a heartfelt request in the form of a love letter to the library, asking for more puzzles and Lego to provide students with a break from digital technology. In response, we purchased several Lego sets and additional jigsaw puzzles, and our students have been enjoying these activities as a way to take a break from their studies.

On the fourth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a space to chill out in.

We’ve created a dedicated space where you can take a break away from your work in order to recharge and refresh. The area is equipped for mindfulness, quietly relaxing, or browsing the many wellbeing resources available. Within the space, you’ll find comfy seating, cushions, blankets, and an assortment of materials designed to enhance your sense of wellbeing. You will also find the library’s collection of books on the topic of health and wellbeing. Most importantly, you can relax and enjoy the views of our beautiful campus. The Library Wellbeing Space is located on level 2 next to the Short Loan Collection. Not on campus? We’ve got you covered. Visit our virtual wellbeing space.

On the fifth day of Christmas Information Services gave to a chance to share the love uncontrollably.

Every Valentine’s day we ask for students to write us a love letter or a break-up letter to allow us to see if there are any improvements that we can make to the library and IT services.

Many letters eloquently expressed the high value placed on the library and IT staff, highlighting their helpfulness, kindness, friendliness, efficiency, and enthusiasm.

On the sixth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a wall to share my thoughts.

Throughout the year we invite you to have your say on key library and IT resources and services. This year we’ve asked you about eating and drinking in the library and your thoughts on reading lists.

On the seventh day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a relaxing space to read comfortably.

During Stress Awareness week in November 2024, Library staff gave up their own time to host a Silent Book Club. The staff decided to continue this event throughout the exam period. Offering students another way to get away from tech (unless they are reading on a kindle or their phone) and read something for pleasure in companionable silence. During this “introvert happy hour” students were able to bring their own hot drink and the library provided a yummy snack and a roaring fire.

On the eighth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a freebie! (from the Scottish Book Trust as part of Book Week Scotland).

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country. Supported by Creative Scotland and SLIC, this week-long event brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to share their love for literature. Throughout the wee free copies of the Scottish Book Trust’s book, Hope, were available for free (there’s still copies if you fancy one). The library book fairies also hid books around campus and in the library for some lucky finders. We highlighted Book Week Scotland activities, such as signing up for an exclusive serialised story by Jenny Colgan and promoted Book Week Scotland events in our local community. We also encouraged participation in the #BeaconsOfHope photo competition.

On the ninth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a way to truly be me.

Thanks to a collaboration between Information Services and the Student Union, we introduced pronouns for profiles in Microsoft 365. Pronouns are essential for recognising and respecting diverse identities. By enabling pronouns in Microsoft 365, we help ensure everyone is addressed correctly and respectfully. If you would like to change your pronoun in Microsoft 365 you can find out how here.

On the tenth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me some amazing library displays.

Throughout the year, library staff aimed to draw attention to various local and international events, as well as subjects of interest to our students. Here is a list of some of the events we highlighted in 2024.

  • Welcome to the library for new students, including study skills and personal skills, such as cooking.
  • We care about our staff and student’s mental health and took part in several events highlighting ways to take care of your mental health. Events included: Mental Health Awareness Week, Wellbeing Week, Random Acts of Kindness Week and Stress Awareness Week.
  • We had a display of books and an online reading list for Women’s History Month.
  • We celebrated LGBT+ History Month and #StirPride.
  • We provided resources and help for Dissertation Week and Skills Week.
  • We celebrated Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Stirling 900 and more!

On the eleventh day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a book from a book fairy.

Throughout 2024, the library book fairies have left books for you to discover. Look for these hidden treasures around the campus, and enjoy a surprise read!

On the twelfth day of Christmas Information Services gave to me a beautiful Christmas Wish Tree.

As we move forward into 2025, we remain dedicated to listening to our students and making changes that enhance their student experience. We encourage all our students and staff users to continue sharing their thoughts and suggestions with us. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us provide the best possible service. What are you hoping for in 2025? Pop into the library to leave your wish on the Christmas tree. It can be personal or a wish for the library or IT at Stirling.

Thank you for being a part of our journey towards continuous improvement.

Merry Christmas from Information Services!
