During 2023/24, Information Services are beginning to implement a new way of procuring and deploying staff IT devices. In future, all IT devices for staff use will be purchased and deployed by IS, instead of local arrangements in each department. This new approach aims to ensure that all staff are able to work using an up-to-date laptop (or desktop where necessary) that is maintained and kept secure.
Due to the age of PCs and laptops across the University, we will be replacing the oldest hardware first. This year, the machines being replaced are typically 7-11 years old, and these represent a significant security risk to the University. Beyond this, we will continue to replace the oldest hardware first, and we will be aiming to ensure that no device is older than five years old, to protect the University from risks associated with old and often unsupported devices.
We will shortly be contacting the last known user of these oldest devices to determine if they are still your primary device in daily use, and if so, we will be providing you with a new laptop and some peripherals if required.
In the meantime, departments can continue to purchase IT hardware for staff members using local budgets. You should continue to follow the existing procurement process by contacting the Information Centre for a quote when you need new IT equipment, then raising a purchase order via your department/faculty.
Disposing of old/redundant devices
As we work through the task of replacing the oldest staff devices, you can help us by identifying and redundant hardware that is no longer required or in use. Please arrange for old PCs, laptops or peripherals to be delivered to room C.1A39 and we will ensure that these are securely erased and disposed of.
