On 1 November 2021 Information Services will be launching an upgraded version of our File Drop service at https://filedrop.stir.ac.uk/. File Drop provides a convenient way for staff and students to send and receive files to and from external parties which would be too large or otherwise unsuitable for transfer by email.
The upgraded service provides all the same features as before, includes new security features and a refreshed appearance.
Multi Factor Authentication
As with M365 and other University services we will be introducing Multi Factor Authentication for File Drop with a similar login process to those services.
Encryption
To provide an additional level of safety when transferring sensitive material, drop-offs can be encrypted using a password. To collect a dropped-off file the recipient will need the drop-off details as before, and the password which can be communicated to them separately, for example by telephone or through Teams. To make use of this feature, check the “Encrypt every file” box on the right of the drop-off page.
Upgrade Process
The upgrade will be performed in a phased process to avoid interfering with use of the service. Existing drop-offs will be available for collection as normal while new drop-offs can be created using the new service. During this phase the address filedrop2.stir.ac.uk will appear in some cases – this is normal.
