Final year festival: celebrating your journey and preparing for what’s next

This year Information Services is part of a new Final Year Festival which will showcase the resources and support available to final year students as you approach the critical dissertation phase of your degree and prepare to leave the University.

The Final year festival will run on week beginning 16th February – read on to see what we have planned. Come and speak to us on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th February in Campus Central Level 3 (top floor) at the Final Year Festival Hub.


Information Services can support you to make writing your dissertation a little bit easier

Writing your dissertation can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Here’s what’s available to help you succeed:

  • Training sessions: We are running a number of training sessions focussed on final years during the festival week – see the courses available and register. These include advice on finding resources for your dissertation, referencing training and building a strong argument in your dissertation.
  • Library Support: See our library subject guides or book a one-to-one with one of our Subject Librarians. Expert help in finding resources for your dissertation.
  • Get resources for your dissertation not available at our library using Document Delivery or ArticleRequest (find out more.)
  • IT Assistance: Word processing a long document can be quite complex. Get a head start with our dissertation template document and training resources for Microsoft Word. We can also help with using referencing tools.
  • Printing your dissertation – find out how to get your masterpiece printed
  • Take a break: The Library has our wellbeing space where you can take time out of your day to relax, you can join in with the library jigsaw. There is also the Lochview Wellbeing Suite, the student hub can also help with student wellbeing, and students have access to 24/7 support from Spectrum.Life.

Checklist Before You Leave University

Before you say goodbye, make sure you tick off these important tasks:

Opt-in to retain access to your university email for 2 years after graduation.
Move files from your University OneDrive to a personal storage solution.
Sell any outstanding print or copy credit to avoid losing money.
Keep your references from RefWorks or EndNote – export them before access ends.
Return any library books and pay outstanding fines.
Download your work from Canvas for future reference.
Link your University LinkedIn account with your personal account to maintain your professional network.

The Final Year Festival is your chance to find out what support you can get during the last months of your studies. Drop in and have a chat with our staff and ask questions and get advice from library and IT staff. This is a time to allow you to celebrate, reflect, and prepare for the exciting journey ahead. Make the most of the all the support available and start planning for life beyond university!
