New Library Exhibition: Scotland in 1824

The latest exhibition in the Library takes inspiration from 200 years ago. In the display cases outside the Archives Reading Room you can see a number of books and other items from our collections published in Scotland in 1824.

This was the era of Sir Walter Scott, James Hogg and John Galt. Scotland was becoming a tourist destination. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh had recently expanded, with many new streets and buildings appearing. In addition to the works of the well-known writers, you can see publications by less well-known women and some cheap publications for poorer folk. It was also an era when Britain was leading attempts to abolish slavery in the Americas.

Please take a moment to see some of the interesting items in our collections. If you would like to consult anything from our Special Collections and Archives, please get in touch: archives@stir.ac.uk.
