Information Services and Student Learning Services offer support to students at every stage of your dissertation. During #StirDisserationWeek we will be highlighting the support and resources available to you.
Student Learning Services Support
Student Learning Services (SLS) offer face-to-face and virtual tutorials. If you have any questions about the structure, writing, referencing, or editing of your dissertation please do get in touch via email at sls@stir.ac.uk to book a slot.
SLS also offers recordings, PowerPoint slides, and additional materials from a range of helpful workshops as part of the Stirling Essentials Study Skills programme. To find these resources, visit the Stirling Essentials Student Skills SharePoint site and click on Workshop Recordings, then Academic skills.
See the Dissertation Section in the Student Learning Services module in Canvas for tips on structure, proofreading, and editing techniques.

Struggling to find articles and books on your dissertation topic? Our Librarians are here to help you find resources for your dissertation research. You can also request an appointment with your Librarian.
Sometimes the library will not have all the materials that you need for your dissertation. You should still be able to access everything you need by using our ArticleRequest and the Document Delivery Service.

Shut Up and Write
Get your writing done with our Shut up and Write events. For those new to the idea, Shut Up and Write is a global movement that aims to get people to show up and focus on their writing, whatever that happens to be. The idea is that by coming together with others we can work ‘alone together’ and draw on the motivation that comes from the collective energy of lots of people committing to work intensely for a dedicated time.
Shut Up and Write sessions are available to dissertation students and offer a dedicated space in the PGR Zone on level 3 in the library. Book a place at one of our Shut Up and Write sessions.
Referencing
See our guides on referencing and referencing software in UniDesk Self Service. We are also running a finding RefWorks for your dissertation support session.

If you are having problems formatting your dissertation you can request dissertation formatting support. To book an appointment, please fill in the request dissertation formatting support form with as much detail as possible. If you have a document you are working on, upload a copy so we can have a look before your appointment time. If your issue is a simple one, we may fix it for you and send your document back to you rather than have a meeting.
All meetings between our Librarians and IT advisors will take place via Microsoft Teams.
Printing and Binding your Dissertation
If you are required to submit a hard copy of your dissertation (please double-check with your department first) you will be required to print on a higher quality dissertation paper. We have two student printers, located in the Cottrell print suite 2A18, loaded with higher quality paper for printing dissertations.
For more information on how to send your dissertation to these printers and details on the cost please see our section on printing your dissertation in UniDesk Self Service.
Graphics and Print Services also offer a dissertation (soft) binding service. See our section on binding your dissertation in UniDesk Self Service for all the details.
Don’t forget to have a look at our dissertation support pages in UniDesk Self Service for all things dissertation-related and keep an eye on #StirDissertationWeek on Twitter and Instagram.
Hi,
I was wondering if the session “Shut up and Write” would be offered to online students too? Thanks
Hi Elmira, great question! We’ll look into how best we could run this and let you know.
It’d be great if you could accommodate online students as well.
Hello Elmira, if you have someone or a group of people who would like to join Shut Up and Write in an online capacity please let us know and we will do our best to facilitate this for you.
