Are you struggling with getting started on an essay? Have you received some writing feedback that you don’t understand? Do you want to take your thesis writing to the next level?
We’re now offering a new free service to all students: one-to-one writing tutorials with a published, professional writer through the Royal Literary Fund.
About the Service
The RLF Fellowship is a project that places professional writers in Universities across the UK to support students with writing. Through one-to-one tutorials focussed on your needs as an academic writer, you can work on issues like:
- constructing and writiing an essay, dissertation or report
- creating your key argument
- structuring and planning your writing
- discovering techniques for editing your work
- improving sentence, paragraph and document structure
- express your ideas more clearly
- improving the style of any academic writing: essays, reports, theses, dissertations, book chapters, PhD submissions
The service is free, independent and confidential. You’ll come along to a 50-minute session to look at a piece of your writing, and discuss the issues you most need support with. It’s possible to book more sessions in the future, too. It’s a rare chance for one-to-one teaching focussed just on your own academic development – so take the opportunity!
“Failing the first assignment knocked my confidence tremendously, so I immediately booked a session, and the RLF Fellow was amazing! They reminded me of things I had learnt previously and showered me with praise, giving me back confidence that I had lost.” – Student, Worcester University
About the Fellow
Josie Giles is a writer and performer from the Orkney Islands. Her latest book is the poetry collection Them! (Picador 2024), and her verse novel Deep Wheel Orcadia won the 2022 Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction book of the year. She’s returning to Stirling after studying for her PhD here on minority languages and Scottish science fiction, completed in 2020. She also performs her own work regularly: her show Drone debuted in the Made in Scotland Showcase at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe and toured internationally.
How to Book
Sessions are available on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout termtime at the Library. To book a session, email josie.giles@rlfeducation.org.uk with a little bit about what you’d like to work on. You’ll then receive full information and a link to book a slot, which you can do up to a month in advance.
Where to Find Us
The Fellowship Office is on the fourth floor of the library, next to Training Room 2. When you leave the main stairwell, turn right and go straight ahead, and you’ll find the office on your left. If you’re leaving the lift, go straight ahead until you reach the print/copy area, and the office is round the corner on your right. See the map below for details. If the door is open, feel free to say hello!
